Do the police care about travel fraud?

Fraud prevention is important but the best thing that can happen to a travel fraudster is to have them convicted. So the question is how many of the frauds against your business have resulted in a conviction? The answer is very few and possibly none. We have seen some recent examples of staff fraud convictions but not many where the fraud has been external, why is this?

Unfortunately the problem we face with the police is that their resources, in the area of fraud or e-crime, are likely to continue dwindling, therefore their ability to look at travel fraud is becoming almost non-existent.

Non-existent now but what about five years ago? Well back then the police perceived that the travel industry was not doing its best to help itself so the police were always more willing to help industries that had their house in order rather than us. I don`t think many of us can argue against the stance of the police both now and in the past but how can we change this?

The travel industry in recent years has definitely got better and I would say that our house is largely in order, but how can we now get the attention of the police? The dwindling resources of the police have seen more emphasis on the police engaging with the private sector with the setting up of sector forums to fight e-crime. The forums mix together the ability of the police to arrest someone with the knowledge of the industry in highlighting the criminals. The engagement of the police and the private sector has largely been successful; the problem now is there are so many industries shouting for the attention of the police it is only those that shout loudest that will win the attention of the police.

I`m confident that the travel industry at the moment is shouting loudly and this will result in many cases being taken by the police, which in past years would have been sentenced to the back of a filing cabinet. As an industry we need to build on this momentum and continue to put pressure on the police to listen to us.

Happy fraud prevention!

David
