Lawsuit issued against Marriott over data breach

Marriott International is facing the biggest lawsuit yet relating to the Starwood data breach.

The suit filed in Maryland federal district court was brought by more than 150 guests in numerous states.

Plaintiffs are represented by five law firms.

It is seeking compensation for ‘deceptive, unconscionable, and substantially injurious practices’.

Marriott now believes the data breach impacted about 300 million guests dating back to 2014.

It is already facing lawsuits filed in its home state of Maryland and elsewhere, and could end up being mired in legal problems for years to come.

More than five million unencrypted passport details were also potentially compromised, Marriott recently disclosed.

Although the company has said the number of guests impacted is fewer than first feared, it is still one of the largest data breaches of its kind.
