One in ten credit card users fall victim to fraudsters

More than four million people were forced to cancel credit or debit cards after falling victim to fraud in the last year, making you more likely to be mugged online than in the street.

A survey of more than 2,000 adults in the UK found one in 10 were targeted by scams that meant they had to replace their cards in the last twelve months alone, the equivalent 4.5 million cards with £2.1 billion stolen in total, according to comparethemarket.com, which commissioned the research.

In 62 per cent of cases, money was successfully removed from the account worth an average of £475.

Nearly a third (31 per cent) of those who were defrauded reported falling victim to a hack which occurred when making a payment online. One in 10 (10 per cent) had their card duplicated at an ATM and a small proportion (8 per cent) said they had been hacked when making a contactless payment.
