What happens if you reply to a scam email?

It all began when I received a message saying that I was wanted by the FBI in the U.S. The email, from Special Agent Erick Bolt, had an official, and quite intimidating, tone.

It said a consignment for me was being held by U.S. customs and he was getting in touch to warn that official documentation was missing. The email concluded: ‘You are required to reply back within 72 hours or you will be prosecuted in a court of law for money laundering.’

I would have been terrified – if I hadn’t known this message was clearly a scam.
